RFC Community Trust scheme

The Reading FC Community Trust unveiled a fantastic new scheme this week, as they begin to bring back district football! In years gone by stand out players across the county have first caught the eye playing for their ‘district’ – a team comprised of the best players from regionalised clusters of schools.

Sadly in recent times that tradition has become a rare occurrence across Reading – but this year the Royals are ensuring it makes a return.

On Tuesday and Wednesday the club helped large open trials for kids from schools across the town at our 3G astro turf, and over the next year will aim to continue to run training sessions for the Reading schools for various age groups – which will help build our district football squads.

As the scheme develops it is hoped that district squads can be built up in West Berkshire, Wokingham, Woodley & Early, Slough and Bracknell.

The Community Trust have been brilliantly backed by funding from the Premier League, as part of the organisation’s ‘School Sports’ initiative.

“This is a great chance for us to help improve football at grass roots level, which will also have a knock on effect at the elite level,” said Reading FC Community Trust Manager Dave Evans.

“We hope to encourage teachers to work alongside our coaches in delivering the training sessions, and mentor them in helping to deliver the project. If we can help improve competitive football within primary schools we will then hopefully start to improve the standard of young footballers within the Reading area, both boys and girls.”
